In January 2025, the United States Senate introduced the Southern Mongolian Human Rights Policy Act (S.288). This is a historic moment. For the first time, a global power has formally acknowledged the repression that we, the people of Southern Mongolia, have endured for decades under Chinese rule.

This is not just politics. It is recognition of our pain, our struggle, and our resistance.

What the Act Reveals

The bill details the systematic human rights abuses we have suffered:

  • The Chinese government has replaced Mongolian-language instruction with Mandarin in schools. Our language is being erased.
  • Traditional herding communities are being forcibly resettled. Our way of life is under attack.
  • Religious practices are restricted. Temples have been closed, and spiritual expression is criminalised.
  • Our lands are being exploited by state-backed mining companies. Environmental damage is destroying places our ancestors lived for centuries.
  • Southern Mongolian activists, such as Hada and Lhamjab Borjigin, have been arrested, tortured, or placed under constant surveillance for speaking out.

This is not ancient history. These abuses are ongoing.

Why This Matters

This bill brings international attention to a struggle the world has ignored for far too long. It validates the voices of thousands who have protested, resisted, and been punished. It tells our people: you are not alone, and your story matters.

But this is only the beginning. One piece of legislation will not change our reality overnight. What it gives us is momentum — and we must use it.

What Happens Next

We must continue to speak, organise, and educate. We must document what is happening and demand that more governments take action. Southern Mongolians are not just victims. We are survivors. We are defenders of a culture the world must not lose.
